The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander is based on the same platform as the Nissan Rogue, but Mitsubishi is the only one of the two to offer a plug-in-hybrid powertrain.

The Outlander PHEV's gas-electric powertrain combines a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and three electric motors. All-wheel drive is standard.

The Outlander PHEV's total output is 248 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. That's quite a bit more than the standard Outlander's 181 horsepower, but the hybrid is more than 800 pounds heavier.

In our testing, the Outlander PHEV reached 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, which is quicker than the nonhybrid version but not as quick as the more muscular Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid.

The EPA says the Outlander PHEV can travel 38 miles on battery power alone. In our 75-mph highway test, it managed 24 miles. Their number may well be achievable in suburbia.

Plugging a depleted battery into a DC fast-charger restored it to 94 percent full in just over an hour. One also can use the car's engine to recharge the battery on the move.

Our Outlander SEL S-AWC PHEV had the optional ($2700) SEL Premium package, which brings a fancier interior.

The Outlander's second-row seating is attractive and accommodating.

A third-row seat is standard on the Outlander and unusual for this class. It's too small to be of much use, however.
