SPOKANE, Wash. — Experts on home water filters for PFAS-contaminated wells will host a free community presentation in Spokane’s West Plains on how to choose the right home PFAS water filter.

According to a press release from the West Plains Water Coalition, the event will take place at the HUB Community Event Space, located at 12703 West 14th, US Highway 2, at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 21. Environmental scientist and home filter researcher Dr. Riley Mulhern will join Washington Department of Ecology environmental engineer Dr. Bri Brinkman to discuss various home filter types, their uses, and updates on state-funded programs related to the West Plains, where numerous private wells have been contaminated by PFAS “forever chemicals” from firefighting foams.

PFAS compounds are associated with severe health risks, including increased cholesterol levels, decreased birth weights, reduced immune response to vaccines, changes in liver enzymes indicating liver damage, heightened risk of blood pressure issues during pregnancy, increased risk of thyroid disease, and elevated risks of testicular and kidney cancer, according to the Washington State Department of Health.

Local filter sellers will be present to demonstrate their PFAS filtration systems. The event will also be available on Facebook and Youtube as well if you can’t attend in person.
